CALCIUM & THE DAIRY CATTLE

We at Yorspharmaceuticals believe that dairy farmers should have access to up-to-date and relevant information on the importance of calcium as a nutritional supplement for all our dairy animals especially lactating animal. Solely for this purpose we have developed a unique range of non-medicated additives for animal feeds under the name of Caltiara. Today we feel privileged to share some of our useful information with you all.

How are Calcium and Bone inter-related?

Calcium is one of the major minerals in the body, about 98% of it is present in animal and human bones and teeth. The remaining calcium in the body is extremely essential for life – helps with muscle activity, prevents blood clotting, processes nerve transmission and facilitates the dynamics of enzyme function. So, in this blog we intend to throw light on some key factors concerning our lactating animals. Let us understand the first concern properly.

Calcium is primarily essential for optimum milk production and growth rate. Calcium is also one of the main components of bone. This is why it is an important but often overlooked factor in achieving proper growth in young cattle. The growth rate is slower if required dosage of calcium intake is inadequate. Where intake is severely deficient rickets, some ailments such as weak skeleton or even bone fractures are likely to occur.

Calcium metabolism at the time of calving is one of the most important animal health factors. It influences production, reproduction and feed conversion efficiency quite significantly. Calcium is equally vital for proper muscle activity. Around calving, there are some crucial demands on the lactating animal’s calcium reserves. The foetus is at its peak growth demand. Thus, the initiation of milk production means increased calcium use. Now that this point is clear, let us move to the next point in concern.

Here is another thought worth considering.

The second concern is that there must actually be calcium available to the lactating animal. There must be calcium sources and no interference in their availability. Bone is a source of calcium but it is not unlimited – the lactating animal who uses all her bone calcium will not stand up! Calcium is essential for proper muscle and bone activity. Falling calcium levels, or possibly diverted calcium, affects different muscles and strength of bones.

The amount of calcium available to the lactating animal depends on the dynamics of bone calcium metabolism. The amount absorbed from the gut which is directly related to calcium intake, age, current calcium status, breed, calcium requirements (growth, pregnancy, lactation), the type of calcium in the diet and other mineral and nutritional interrelationships. Generally, the calcium availability decreases as calcium intake increases and mostly the absorption of calcium from the diet through the gut wall declines as the lactating animal ages.

How do additional supplements help?

Supplements such as maize or cereal silages or grain, while providing more energy and hence ideally complementing high protein grass or plugging feed deficits, contain little or no calcium, amongst other things. Failure to provide all of the nutrients required for milk production, regardless of total energy or total dry matter intake will limit milk production and profitability.

Lactating animals can be hypocalcaemia and get clinical milk fever, at any stage of the season. Down lactating animal and metabolic problems in lactating dairy animals assumed to be low magnesium are frequently primarily due to inadequate calcium or a complex syndrome related to the interaction of magnesium, calcium and energy. Always consider all three. Do not assume that lactating animals can only get milk fever around calving or in early lactation, or that only mature lactating animals can be affected.

This is where we come in to help you.

Calcium supplementation is most often achieved by use of calcium carbonate or Caltiara™. The percentage of calcium in the product and fineness of grinding – smallest particle size – are important considerations for absorption and cost effectiveness. In particular circumstances more immediately absorbable calcium, such as calcium chloride may be required also but should be used only with veterinary advice.

Maximise the nutritional benefits of cereals and maize with supplements like Caltiara™. Calcium is an integral component of milk and proper calcium metabolism is an essential part of optimum lactating animal health and production. Consequently, insufficient available dietary calcium will have significant negative effects on the economic status of any particular farm. When available dietary calcium does not meet their needs, dairy lactating animals have a limited ability to maintain output by utilising “calcium” stores, by extracting calcium from bone.

We give you our signature product- Caltiara Liquid.

As we have well understood Calcium is an essential mineral for animals at all stages of life. Bones and Egg Shell are made up of Calcium as a major constituent. Calcium also plays vital role in other metabolic process. In addition to a balanced diet, animals require a supplementary source of Calcium to maintain optimum health. CALTIARA-L is a liquid calcium supplement designed especially for animals to fulfill their Calcium requirement.

In addition to Calcium, CALTIARA-L also contains the essential Vitamin D3, which aids the absorption of calcium from the gut. This supplement support proper bone development in animals, egg-shell integrity in birds and normal growth of bone in young animals and increased milk production in Cattles. CALTIARA-L also provides other essential minerals as Iron, Cobalt along with Vitamin B12, which are essential for supporting metabolic process for proper functioning of skeletal muscular system. A presence of hepato-protector makes the CALTIARA-L a safe and effective product.

Indication:

  • Improvement of Egg Shell quality, Feed Consumption Ratio (FCR) & Productivity
  • Achieving Faster Growth and Weight Gain
  • Formation of Stronger Bones.
  • Improvement of bone and muscle metabolism
  • Increase in milk production & optimization of fat level in milk in cattle
  • Prevention of Milk Fever, Osteoporosis & Rickets.
