THE LIVER- A CORNERSTONE OF LIVESTOCK PERFORMANCE

Picture yourself driving a formula 1 at maximum speed. All lights are green and suddenly black out. What is the diagnosis? Just a clogged car filter. Now, imagine this scenario in the case of animal production: the filter maps to the animal liver, a central metabolic organ. The liver acts as a blood cleanser, detoxifier and plays a pivotal role for the proper functioning of animal organism. If a liver begins functioning abnormally, what is the best course of action to take?

THE LIVER: AN ACTOR OF IMMUNITY

The liver is one of the largest and most sensitive organs, particularly in mammals. It receives a major part of intestinal blood and acts to regulate the blood glucose levels. Its primary functions are metabolic: maintenance of homeostasis, glucose and lipid energy. It is a place of storage of nutrients and it synthetizes plasma proteins.

The liver also favours the animal body’s creation of complex molecules (carbohydrates, proteins, glycoproteins) by precursors. This process is also referred to as anabolism. For example, gluconeogenesis synthetize glucose from volatile fatty acids (VFA). There are other molecules that are created in the liver, such as cholesterol; cholesterol is involved in the digestion of fats or steroid hormones that govern reproduction.

liver, organ, life
Liver is a very important organ in all living organisms

The liver ensures detoxification and excretion of endogenous and exogenous waste. It neutralizes toxic elements from the metabolism (bilirubin, ammonia, ketones) then transforms them into recycled nutrients and expels them via urine. If the detoxification process does not function properly, toxic substances will accumulate in the liver; this build-up can hamper the various metabolic activities of hepatocytes.

A major actor of the immune system, the liver is the first barrier to all antigens. It contributes to the control of immune responses, of inflammation and of stress.

FUNCTIONS OF THE LIVER

Carbohydrate metabolism • Glucose is used for energy within the animal body. Glucose is stored in the liver as glycogen under the action of insulin, which is secreted by the pancreas. When energy is required the glycogen is broken down by glucagon, also secreted by the pancreas.

Protein metabolism • Formation of plasma proteins – for example, albumin, fibrinogen, prothrombin and globulins. • Regulation of amino acids. The liver uses amino acids to build proteins; any amino acids that are not essential may be converted into more useful ones – a process called transamination. • Production of urea. Excess amino acids cannot be stored and are converted to ammonia and then urea – a process called deamination.

Fat metabolism • Fatty acids and glycerol are converted by the liver into phospholipids and cholesterol. The phospholipids are used to build cell membranes and cholesterol is used for bile salts. Excess fat is then stored in deposits around the animal body.

Storage of vitamins • Vitamins including A, D, E and K are stored in the liver.

SUPPLEMENTS AND DIET

There are many diets designed to support the liver during disease and carry on supporting the liver afterwards. Most food companies will have a specially formulated liver diet. These diets mainly have reduced protein content, but the protein that is included is of high biological value. Liver diets are designed so they are easy for the liver to handle, and protein is restricted. When supporting animals with hepatic disease, the following points should be considered when selecting a diet.

The diet should: • support protein synthesis; • maintain optimal animal bodyweight; • decrease protein catabolism; • slow disease progression; • support liver regeneration; and • encourage the animal to eat. Current thinking is that animals with hepatic encephalopathy should be fed a hepatic diet and, crucially, cats with hepatic lipidosis must be fed a low-fat diet, which may not always be a liver diet. A low fat, high fibre diet maybe more beneficial. Some supplements are said to support the liver and also aid detoxification – for example, YORSTONER.

    1. Thank you for giving your valuable time to the article and for the interest shown.
Liver is the second largest organ in our body and it has some 500 critical jobs. It removes all toxins, clears medication from our body , breaks down all our food and many more.

In fact you cant live a week without your liver. So these are few Tips to avoid Liver Disease and Stay Right with your Liver :
      1) Limit alcohol intake and drink in moderation
      2) Regular Exercise and have an active lifestyle
      3) Have a balanced and healthy diet – Less fatty foods and more fibre.
      4) Watch your body weight
      5) Get Vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B and wash hands.
      6) Be careful with the over the counter traditional medicines and remedies
      7) Safe Sex to avoid Hepatitis C
      8) Cut down smoking or stop smoking
      9) Keep your diabetes , high BP, High Cholesterol under good control with diet, exercise and medications.

Hope I have answered to your query.

    2. As far as Maintaining liver health of livestock is concerned any action designed to support, detoxify and to protect liver functions can contribute to strengthening of overall liver health. Here are few possible actions for maintaining liver health in livestock :

      1) adjust diet by limiting abrupt feeding transitions, according to the animals stage of development
      2) maintain animals energy requirements so that it is spared from potential deficit and from inadequate mobilization of its fat reserves
      3) detoxify the liver and stimulate animals appetite with some nutritional supplements that will contribute to stimulate liver health. Yorstoner Powder and Yorstoner forte Liquid will improve overall liver function, reduce ill effects of toxins, enhance growth and weight gain, maintain proper feed intake, improve digestion and absorption of the nutrients in livestock
