Good cheese comes from happy milk and happy milk comes from contented cows!
So we need to keep contentment, happiness and harmony as primary principles of animal husbandry.
All the practical requirements of cow care – good housing, plenty of good hay, ample pasturage in season, quiet and respectful handling are essentials which contribute to your cow’s wellbeing and the well-being of the farm.
What is Parturition or Calving?
Parturition or Calving is the process of delivering a fully developed foetus from the female uterus after completion of the natural gestation period.
There are three stages to the birthing process, or parturition: dilation of the cervix, delivery of the calf, and delivery of the placenta.
Even though the Parturition is a normal physiological process, it requires to take due care at all stages of Parturition by manager of the herd.
Care before Parturition:
- Turning cow into a loose box: To isolate from other animals, animal of advance pregnancy must be separated into calving box which must be cleaned & properly disinfected, bedded with clean, soft & absorbent litter
- Guarding Against Milk Fever: In advanced pregnancy stage high yielding & first calvers are susceptible to Milk fever. To avoid it, provide enough minerals especially calcium by bone meal in daily diet. Give large doses of Vitamin D 3 about a week period to calving.
- Avoid Milking: Prior to parturition which is likely to delay parturition by few hours.
- Watch for parturition signs: Signs to know primary stage of parturition which are udder becomes large, distended, herd, depressed or hollow appearance on either side of tail head, vulva enlarged in size, thick mucus discharge from vulva, and uneasiness of the animal.
Care during Parturition:
- Dilation Phase: Consists of the acts lie down & get ups, uneasiness due to labour pain, observe these acts from safe distance without making disturbances to animal.
- Parturition period: In normal case period is of 2-3 hrs while in first calving 4-5 hrs or more. Observe from safe distance without disturbing the animal.
- Watch for presentation of Calf: The phase of expulsion of foetus, observe the appearance of water bag & its gradual emergence, bursting of it and appearance of fore feet with hoof & mouth.
- Normal presentation: Any deviation from normal presentation of calf occurs; the immediate help of veterinarian should be taken.

Care after Parturition:
- Expulsion of placenta / after birth: The placenta is discharged within 5-6 hrs after calving in normal case while if not discharged within 6-7 hrs, get the help of veterinarian and treat as per requirement.
- Supply Luke-warm drinking water to cow.
- When placenta expelled, prevent cow from eating.
- The placenta should be properly disposed off by burying in ground.
- Clean cow’s body with clean & warm water with antiseptic.
- Supply moistened bran with crude sugar or molasses.

Care with regard to milking of cow:
- After Parturition when first milking, ensure that all blockages from teats are removed.
- Cow may be milked three times a day until the inflammation disappears from the udder.
- Provide enough minerals i.e. calcium & phosphorus through diet& do not milk fully at a “time to avoid milk fever in high yielding cows.
Care with regards to feeding:
- Types of feeds provided – milk laxative, palatable & nutritious.
- Suitable feeds – Wheat bran, oats, and linseed oil seeds.
- DCP & TDN of ration must be 16-18% & 70% respectively.
- 40-60 gm Sterilized bone meal & 40 gm common salt may be adder’, to grains.
- Succulent green, palatable fodders containing 50-60% legumes are suitable while amount concentrates should be increased gradually in three weeks.

Nutritional Care after Calving:
It is important to meet the nutritional needs of a cow as soon as she calves.

The cow needs to recover from calving and start cycling again during that time period while at the same time providing enough milk for her growing calf.
Cow undergoes a lot of stress while calving, therefore, the animal should be given light, palatable, mild laxative ration containing warm rice gruel, boiled rice/ wheat bran, boiled millet or wheat mixed with edible oil, bypass fat, Jaggery, Soya, Asafoetida, Methi, Black Cumin, Ginger etc. for 2 to 3 days after calving. This kind of diet is also helpful in early expulsion of placenta.
Depending on her potential for milk production, a cow could require as much as 40 to 50% more energy and protein compared to the two months ahead of calving. Her needs for nutrients such as Vitamin A, calcium and phosphorus are much greater as well.
In addition, the animal should be given tender green fodder and fresh water as much as it wants to drink, but do not give hot water.
Ensure the milking cow has constant access to clean drinking water and receives required quantity of Mineral Mixture daily.
Importance of Feeding Mineral Mixture
Mineral mixture contains all the essential minerals in required quantities.
Essential Minerals i.e. macro and micro minerals and A, D and E vitamins should also be provided after calving for good health. Supplementing trace minerals after calving is extremely beneficial for mother and calf, even if they do not test as mineral deficient.
BENEFITS OF FEEDING MINERAL MIXTURE
